ABOUT F47 / SGPOA AIRPORT ON ST. GEORGE ISLAND, FLORIDA First, we really have NO services at all at F47. There is a phone & a port-a-let and we have some chocks, but that is it. We have a pay box where you pay your landing & tie down fees -- $ 20.00 for landing and $10.00/day for tie down. Tie down space is on a first-come, first-served basis. There are some spaces off the paved tarmac too. If you have not arranged a car, we recommend that you stop at KAAF in Apalachicola and let someone off to rent a car there. Please be advised that there are no cabs or other transportation service on St. George Island. It is about 3 miles from the airport (F47) to the nearest grocery store. There are additional restaurants in Apalach, so we recommend having access to a car. You can arrange ahead to rent bikes for the week (which they will deliver to the home you are renting), but you cannot carry many groceries on a bike! Bike rentals are available at St. George Island Adventures, 105 E. Gulf Beach Drive, 850-927-3655. They also rent scooters but we do not allow scooters (except for owners) in the St George Plantation if you rental home is located within its boundaries. The folks at KAAF have rental cars. Their phone is 850-653-2222. Bill, Pat and Mike Ruic run the airport and are fine folks. The cars are not inexpensive, but your alternative is to stop at KPFN or KTLH (depending on where you are coming from) and do the same thing. Some owner pilots nearly always stop at KAAF & buy fuel on their way back from SGI. They like to patronize that airport because it has lights, fuel, mechanics and 3 5000'+ runways w/approaches. With our fickle weather that is good to have 6 miles (by air) away. If you are renting through a rental management company maybe someone from your rental company would run you over to AAF to get a car after you land at F47, but I would sure check on that first. As to flying in, whether you will be on instrument plan or VFR, either way, you will chat w/Tyndall AFB as your final ATC contact. Even if you are VFR, they ask that you make radio contact with them as you first enter their MOAs which cover the entire Panhandle). Use 124.15 or 125.2. If the MOAs are hot & you are on an IFR plan, they will take you thru the "corridor". That means no matter where you are coming from, you will fly over to PFN and then back along the coast to F47. If you can go VFR, you can go straight, but if they are "hot" they are the Top Gun guys. They go VERY fast (stall is about 275 mph) and maneuver a lot. Get the weather for F47 on 119.925, which is AAF's automated weather. Their phone is 850-653-8271. You cannot pick up their ASOS phone on the ground at F47, so you have to use the phone. Many of our owner pilots call AAF 122.8 about 15-20 miles out & report they will be transitioning their space en route to F47. They will tell you if there is any other traffic in the area. Then they switch to F47 122.9 & report they're coming in. You should be aware that there are at least 4 other airports on the 2 Unicom frequencies for AAF & F47, so you need to listen carefully. If you have further questions you can call our security department at 850-927-2362. St. George Island is a beautiful place and the Plantation is delightful.
